CB Jalen Barnes has three on top

Rising cornerback Jalen Barnes (Port Arthur, Texas/Memorial) has seven offers, but Tulsa, Iowa State and Utah have managed to make his top three.

Barnes said he doesn’t have any official visits scheduled as of yet, but he is expecting to make trips to those three schools before the end of the football season. Mississippi State, Kansas, North Texas and San Jose State also have offered him.

Barnes, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound cornerback, said he’s been recruited to Tulsa by defensive tackle Calvin Thibodeaux, to Iowa State by running backs coach Kenith Pope and to Utah by safeties coach/recruiting coordinator Morgan Scalley.

“When [Tulsa] offered me, they said I have an opportunity to play from the start,” Barnes said. “With Iowa State, I like the fact that they’re in the Big 12, and the competition is really good. Utah’s a BCS contender, and that’s a big thing to me.”

Barnes, a physical cover corner and a sound tackler, has seen improvements with his game overall since last spring. He put on 15 pounds of muscle during the summer and trimmed his 40-yard dash time from 4.7 seconds to 4.5. Barnes showed his talents at summer camps hosted by Houston, Baylor and TCU.

Barnes has helped Memorial to a 3-0 record after defeating Houston Westside, 31-16, on Friday. Barnes and the Memorial defense forced two turnovers and made Westside punt six times.

“Our team goal is to win state,” Barnes said. “My individual goal is to try and get all-state and pick a good college.”
