For Sergio Phillips (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto), football wasn’t the only factor when it came time to make a college decision.
The three-star offensive lineman had bigger things in mind when he gave his verbal pledge to San Diego State on Monday.
“One reason I chose them is they have my major -- criminal justice -- and that plays a big part in what I want to do in college,” Phillips said. “I want to be on the SWAT team.”
A 6-foot-1, 289-pound guard, Phillips chose the Aztecs over offers from Memphis, New Mexico and New Mexico State. He’s San Diego State’s seventh commitment for its 2013 recruiting class.
The opportunity to play for a program that’s joining the Big East was a factor for Phillips, and so was the strong bond he’s developed with assistant coach Jeff Horton and the rest of the SDSU coaching staff.
“I just felt like I was ready to make my decision, and their coaches really wanted me,” he said.
They made it their goal to get the recruiting process out of the way in time for their final high school season. Now they can focus on the task at hand.
“That was very important to me,” Phillips said, “because my main goal is to win a state championships for DeSoto. It’s going to be great, and I just want to have fun.”
