Baseball prospect shining at QB

11/21/2011

Quarterback Chuck Taylor (Mansfield, Texas/Timberview) has thrown for nearly 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for nearly 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. He tallied 323 total yards and two touchdowns on Saturday, leading Timberview to a Texas Class 5A Division II second-round playoff victory.

Pretty impressive for someone who on Saturday said he didn’t receive one offer – or even a letter of interest – from an FBS college recruiter.

“For football, I didn’t hear anything,” said Taylor, a 5-foot-9, 185-pounder who has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball for Texas-Arlington. “I was just looking at who wanted me. UTA wanted me for baseball. Nobody wanted me for football.”

Taylor is considered a pro baseball prospect as an outfielder. He signed with the Mavericks as a center fielder and expects to be an immediate impact player. Taylor, however, said he wouldn’t have minded entertaining his baseball offers with a couple of football offers.

“It was real frustrating,” Taylor said, “because I sent film to a lot of people. Nobody wanted to bite, though. I took what was out there.”

Taylor will look to continue his high school football career Saturday, as Timberview advanced to the regional round of the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Timberview is riding a seven-game winning streak with Taylor taking the snaps.
