COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Three-star wide receiver Keevan Lucas (Abilene, Texas/Abilene) was key in Abilene’s semifinal run in the Texas State 7-on-7 Championships at Texas A&M. Now, he’s focusing on the 2012 season -- as well as his college plans.
Lucas verbally committed to Tulsa on June 21, but the 5-foot-10, 185-pound receiver said he’s still planning on taking official visits during and possibly after the upcoming season. He said he hears a lot from Louisiana Tech, which has offered and checks in with him regularly.
“I still have an open heart right now,” Lucas said. “I’ve never been in this situation before. There were a lot of people upset with me because they felt I jumped the gun. Maybe I did, but I really liked what I saw at Tulsa.
“They [Tulsa] have a good academic program. When I went up there, the coaches knew my name before I even knew who they were. I liked the environment there, and I felt I could improve my game there. As of now, my heart’s with Tulsa, but I’m just taking my time with everything. By the end of the season, you never know what could happen.”
Lucas said he hasn’t set his schedule for official visits, but Louisiana Tech will be one of his five. As a junior, Lucas caught 68 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. Lucas ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at the Tulsa camp.
Whether he stays at Tulsa or chooses to consider another school, Lucas said he hopes he’s made enough of an impression over the summer to be considered an elite receiver nationally. He is ranked No. 140 among receivers in the 2013 class, No. 167 among players in Texas.
“I feel like my speed and my quickness has improved, and my routes are way better,” Lucas said. “I’ve been working my butt off. I’m just trying to stay healthy this year and show everybody I’m one of the top receivers in the 2013 class.”
