WR Brian O'Bannon a two-sport athlete?

7/21/2012

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- As good of a wide receiver Brian O’Bannon (Mesquite, Texas/Horn) has been on the football field, he’s going to make a decision before January.

Football or baseball? Or both?

In addition to being a go-to player in Horn’s passing attack, O’Bannon is a standout center fielder for Horn’s baseball team. He has an offer to play baseball at Kansas State and also is being courted by Houston and Baylor. A potential leadoff hitter in college, O'Bannon batted a team-best .408 with a double, two triples, 11 RBI and 10 stolen bases in the spring.

“Right now, I’m looking to play both,” O’Bannon said. “As the time comes, I know I’ll have to choose which I want to play. When it comes down to signing day, I’ll probably make my decision and focus on one.”

Currently, O’Bannon doesn’t hold a football offer, but he’s been in conversation with Kansas State, Kansas, TCU and Texas Tech. O’Bannon, who was the receivers MVP of the Dallas Nike Football Training Camp in March, said playing football and baseball at Kansas State would be an intriguing proposition.

O’Bannon had 30 catches for 267 yards and a touchdown for Horn last season and has been a solid option in the slot for Horn during the Texas State 7-on-7 Championships at Texas A&M. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds at a TCU camp, and he’s attended additional camps hosted by A&M and North Texas. O’Bannon said he will take in the Houston camp on Sunday and the Kansas State camp on July 28.

“I just want to make big plays and get in the end zone as many times as I can,” O’Bannon said. “I want to go up and make highlight catches and show that I’m the best.”
