At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, quarterback Austin Robinson (Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal) has the size and skill set to be a dynamic, dual-threat quarterback on the college level. He threw for 1,479 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushing for 521 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior.
Robinson picked up his first and only from UTSA in April, but he’s receiving interest from TCU, Texas Tech and Oregon and is looking for one of those schools to offer. He’s shown his talents at recent camps hosted by Texas Tech, TCU, Rice and UTSA.
“Everything’s going well, very consistent,” Robinson said of the recruiting process. “Everybody’s been trying to get me to come to their camp, and a bunch of schools are narrowing down their quarterback charts. It’s a tough decision, but I know all the schools want to have the right guy for the position. I’m in the top two or three for a couple of schools, so we’ll see what happens.”
Robinson has been impressive in the spring. He was clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.61 seconds at a TCU camp and 4.68 seconds at a Texas Tech camp. Robinson ran a personal-best 4.5-second 40 during track season, where he competed in the 100 and 200 meters for Episcopal.
Robinson’s received compliments about his strong arm, athleticism and his ability to make quick decisions. The one thing he said he’s working on more is his footwork.
“It’s all repetition. That’s the best thing with every situation,” Robinson said. “I’m getting all of my steps down – three-step, one-step, five-step and even seven-step. I’m working on my rollouts and just getting everything down and being more consistent.”
Robinson is letting the process maturate through the summer. He said when the time is right, he will choose a college that will benefit him not only athletically but also academically. In fact, academics hold top priority for the quarterback, who has a 3.4 grade-point average and is interested in going pre-med in college.
“The academics are a big stronghold in my family,” Robinson said. “I want to have a solid foundation with both academics and athletics. I’m looking for a well-rounded school with a good football team, but I’m always going to be focused on academics first.”
