Derrick Mitchell Jr. (St. Louis/Vashon) had heard all the spiels from college coaches, but there was something about Iowa that felt extra genuine. It was enough to make him give a verbal pledge on Thursday.
Mitchell, a three-star athlete, verbally committed to the Hawkeyes and became the program’s 10th commit of the 2013 recruiting class. He is the first commitment from the Show-Me State.
Mitchell chose Iowa over offers from Kansas State, Indiana, Nebraska and Illinois. He was recruited by recruiting coordinator/tight ends coach Eric Johnson.
