Three-star cornerback Tavares Garner (Manvel, Texas/Manvel) decommitted from Texas Tech last week to explore other options. That option resides in the SEC.
Garner confirmed via text message Thursday morning that he has verbally committed to Texas A&M. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound defensive back decommitted from Texas Tech on Friday and had a short list of Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor and Oklahoma State. Of the four, Texas was the only school not to offer.
Garner’s commitment gives the Aggies 19 for the 2013 recruiting class. Surprisingly, Garner is the first cornerback to commit to the Aggies.
Garner had 48 tackles, 19 pass breakups and three interceptions as a junior for Manvel, which advanced to the Texas Class 4A Division II state championship game this past season. He’s ranked No. 43 among all cornerbacks nationally and No. 92 among players in Texas in the 2013 class.
