A central Texas 1-2 punch has become Texas State’s new 1-2 punch.
After Stephenville (Texas) quarterback Tyler Jones committed to the Bobcats on Tuesday, his favorite target, ESPN 300 receiver Brice Gunter, decided to follow suit. Gunter verbally committed to Texas State on Wednesday, becoming the Bobcats’ second commitment of the 2013 recruiting class.
A four-star receiver, Gunter chose Texas State over an offer from Air Force and interest from Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston, Tulsa, TCU and SMU. Recruited by defensive tackles coach Reuben Vaughn, Gunter is No. 173 in the ESPN 300.
“It’s a dream come true,” Gunter said. “There’s a lot of excitement, and I want to come in and show I can make a lot of electric plays. I want to show everyone what I can do.”
Gunter is ranked No. 25 among receivers nationally. He is No. 27 among players in Texas.
Gunter said Vaughn and receivers coach Jason Johnson were pivotal in his commitment. He said he felt a lot of appreciation when he visited the campus, and he’s looking forward to bringing his talents to San Marcos, Texas.
“The coaches were real inviting,” he said. “If you’re wanted, knowing that makes it all better. They showed me around, and they were real cool. Whenever they want you, you want them back.”
At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, Gunter has shown himself to be a big target with solid speed and great hands. He caught 69 passes for 1,099 yards and 15 touchdowns for Stephenville last season and was a finalist for the Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year – ultimately won by Under Armour All-American and Texas signee Johnathan Gray.
Gunter, who has run the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds, recently showed his talents in 7-on-7 competition at last month’s Dallas Under Armour Sevens event. He and Jones led Stephenville to a tournament championship. Stephenville, a Class 3A school, defeated Class 4A and Class 5A teams en route to the title.
“Some call us the most dynamic duo in the state of Texas,” Gunter said of him and Jones. “Now, we get to go out and prove it.”
