Watch List QB Swoopes enjoys OU trip

Before ESPNU Watch List quarterback Tyrone Swoopes (Whitewright, Texas/Whitewright) prepares for the Texas Class 2A plaoffs, he and his mother decided to take in the Sooners experience over the weekend.

Swoopes spent Saturday on the Oklahoma campus and took in the Sooners’ 41-25 victory over Texas A&M. It was the first recruiting trip to Norman for the 6-foot-5, 220-pound, dual-threat quarterback, and the visit gave him a better picture of the Sooners lifestyle.

“I liked it a lot,” Swoopes said. “[Norman] kind of felt like home, because it’s not really that big. The campus is pretty small, which surprised me. I had a real good time.”

Swoopes had a chance to visit with some of the players and noticed a special camaraderie between all of them. He said the entire, 110-plus roster is connected by way of the May death of linebacker Austin Box. Swoopes also said the player-coach relationship was something that he found to be positive.

“All the guys are really close, and you can tell that everyone is close because of that,” Swoopes said. “I liked that. It was really cool to see.”

Swoopes added that he is a fan of the Sooners’ style offense – even though the team just lost all-everything receiver Ryan Broyles for the season. The Sooners have scored 40 or more points in seven of nine games, including a season-high 62 points against Ball State on Oct. 1, the week before the game against Texas.

Swoopes said his interest with OU is high, but he is still wide open with his recruiting process. Swoopes has visited TCU a couple of times, and he was at Texas when the Longhorns beat BYU. Swoopes, additionally, was at the Cotton Bowl for the Texas-OU Red River Rivalry.

Swoopes’ next unofficial visit is yet to be determined, as he wants to focus on the playoffs from now until Whitewright is alive in postseason play. He currently is holding offers from TCU, Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, Stanford and Notre Dame. Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon and Arizona State are among the schools expressing interest.
