And just like that, Arkansas was back to square one.
ESPNU 150 Watch List running back Jamel James (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) announced late Wednesday that he has decommitted from the Razorbacks. He and athlete Austin Bennett (Manvel, Texas) were Arkansas’ two commitments of the 2013 class, but after hearing about the news of coach Bobby Petrino getting fired Tuesday, James has decided to weigh other options.
“Even though I have decommitted, I still love Arkansas,” James said to followers by way of his Twitter page. “Y’all showed me so much love and respect that.”
Bennett announced his decommitment hours after Petrino was let go. James received the news about Petrino after a Tuesday-night fishing trip. After taking a day to look at the situation from all angles, the 5-foot-11, 215-pound running back chose to reopen his recruiting process. The Razorbacks currently are now without a commitment in the 2013 class.
In addition to Arkansas, James has offers from LSU, USC, Florida State and Texas Tech. Oregon and Oklahoma are among the schools that have shown interest. James rushed for 1,011 yards and 16 touchdowns during the 2011 season, leading Cinco Ranch to the second round of the Texas Class 5A Division I playoffs.
