ESPNU 150 Watch List wide receiver Ra’Shaad Samples (Dallas/Skyline) is expected to miss as many as four months after fracturing his left fibula during Sunday’s Nike Football Training Camp in Irving, Texas. If rehabilitation goes in his favor, he could be back on the football field and competing in three months.
That would be just enough time for him to make his return in Beaverton, Ore. Samples was invited to participate in The Opening, a four-day training and competition event that will feature the nation’s top 150 players at the Nike headquarters. The event will take place July 5-8.
“I’m just thanking God,” said Samples, who is wearing a hard cast on his left leg. “It’s an honor, and I plan on balling. I get another chance to show why I’m the best wide receiver in the state.”
If Samples completes rehab and returns to the form prior to the injury, he could be making his case for the best receiver in the country. At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, Samples has 33 offers from schools coast to coast, including Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and a host of other schools.
During the 2011 season, Samples caught 65 passes for 1,369 yards and 19 touchdowns on a team that featured Under Armour All-American and Texas A&M signee Thomas Johnson. Samples already has accepted an invitation to play in the UA All-American Game in January 2013.
Samples is the ninth invitee to The Opening for this year. He is the fifth Texan to receive an invitation, joining defensive end Torrodney Prevot (Houston/Taylor), linebacker Mike Mitchell (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood), cornerback Maurice Smith (Sugar Land, Texas/Dulles) and wide receiver Jake Oliver (Dallas/Jesuit).
