After attending the Rice junior day last Saturday, running back Marquis Warford (San Antonio/Madison) thought the Conference USA school was the place for him. He gave Rice a verbal commitment immediately following the junior day.
On Wednesday, Warford took a step back and decided to reopen his options. The 5-foot-8, 169-pound running back decommitted from the Owls and said he will let the recruiting process play out a little more through the spring and summer.
“I verballed to Rice, but I want to wait until after spring football to make a decision,” Warford said. “This is a decision I will have to keep for the rest of my life, so I wanted to make sure I was making the right choice.”
Rice currently is Warford’s only offer, but he is getting looks from Boise State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Houston, Texas State and UTSA. Warford was an offensive sparkplug for Madison in 2011, rushing for 2,162 yards and 22 touchdowns and also catching 30 passes for 548 yards and four touchdowns.
Warford has made visits to Texas Tech, TCU, Houston and Texas State, in addition to Rice. He said Rice is still an option, but he wanted to see what everyone else has to offer first.
“I’m looking for a place I can call home,” Warford said. “I want to be at a place where I won’t be homesick, a place where I won’t want to come home every weekend.
“I’m looking for a place with a good education. You’ve got to have good academics. I also want to be on a decent team that’s ready to build a championship and go far.”
