This spring will be very important for Alex Cooper (Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite). The two-sport athlete will balance football conditioning with AAU basketball.
Along with that, Cooper will focus on recruiting -- for both sports. The 6-foot, 160-pound junior is being viewed as both a quarterback and an athlete on the football field, but he also is getting looks as a guard on the basketball court.
Cooper has garnered interest from schools in both sports, and he is hoping to attract more -- and get his first offer -- in time for his senior season. Cooper has received correspondence from Texas A&M, North Texas, Purdue and Georgetown in football. He has looks from Texas Tech, North Texas, Wichita State, Maryland, Missouri State and Lehigh in basketball.
“Right now, I don’t know yet. I’m playing both next year, though,” Cooper said. “I’m getting more stuff in basketball than football. It just depends on how it all falls.”
Cooper averaged roughly 14 points a game for Mesquite’s basketball team. As good as he was on the court, he might have been a more productive quarterback on the football field. Cooper threw for 2,471 yards and 21 touchdowns and completed 65 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 352 yards and three touchdowns.
Cooper said he hopes to play both sports in college but will keep all options open as the spring progresses.
“I’m looking for a good campus that is going to make me better in whatever I do and will help me get to the next level with a coach that can help me,” Cooper said.
