Fred Ross Jr. (Tyler, Texas/John Tyler) always has been a fan of Oklahoma State and has always seen himself in a Cowboys uniform. Late Friday night, he decided to make things official.
Ross, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound receiver, verbally committed to Oklahoma State following John Tyler’s playoff basketball game Friday. While John Tyler lost the game, Ross was able to get a nice consolation prize by choosing the Cowboys over offers from Texas Tech and Baylor and strong interest from Arkansas.
Ross said he discussed recruiting Friday night with his mother, Kay McCalister, and she helped him make the decision to turn his high interest in Oklahoma State into a verbal pledge.
“We talked about it, and she said she didn’t see why I would go ahead and commit since it was my favorite school,” Ross said. “I thought about it, and I made my decision.”
Ross received an offer from the Cowboys during their junior day last week. Recruited by offensive line coach Joe Wickline, Ross said he enjoyed the facilities, and he was a big fan of the coaching staff.
“They’ve got some great coaches. Look at the outstanding receivers in the NFL,” said Ross, referring to the Dallas Cowboys’ Dez Bryant and potential first-round draft pick Justin Blackmon. “For any receiver, who wouldn’t want to go there?”
Ross had additional offers from Texas Tech, Missouri, Rice, West Virginia, Memphis and Mississippi State. He capped his junior season with 99 receptions for 1,335 yards and 15 touchdowns. Ross helped John Tyler to a Texas Class 4A Division I state-semifinal appearance.
