Texas QB Caraway looking to build his name

2/9/2012

As stars continue to get discovered in the 2013 class, Bivins Caraway III (Longview, Texas) is doing his part to make sure scouts don’t forget about the talent in East Texas.

At 6-foot and 200 pounds, Caraway is considered a sleeper in his class. He completed his first year as a starter after being a backup quarterback as a sophomore. Caraway is slightly undersized, but his numbers -- 2,425 passing yards and 23 touchdowns with only five interceptions -- showed his accuracy and poise at the position.

“I feel like I can put the ball anywhere,” said Caraway, who led Longview to the third round of the Texas Class 5A playoffs this past season. “I have a pretty strong arm, too.”

Caraway’s performances in 2011 were enough for him to garner early correspondence from Oregon. Aside from that, Caraway said his recruiting process has been relatively slow.

“Maybe it’s because we’re down here in Longview,” he said. “We don’t really get a lot of notice down here.”

Caraway said he’s making sure colleges have a chance to judge for themselves, as he forwarded highlight tapes to more than 15 schools earlier this week. He doesn’t have any junior day invitations for now, but he’s hoping the tapes will make him an attractive player for a few schools looking for a pro-style quarterback in an athletic, dual-threat quarterback’s body.

“I think I had a pretty successful year. I did a lot of things I didn’t think I could do,” Caraway said. “I surprised myself a few times. As a team, I thought we were pretty successful. Normally, we are a running team, but we threw ball a lot more, and it worked for us.

“Getting better and getting noticed, that’s at the top of my list right now. I’ve been finding new stuff to do every day that’ll help me out. That’s really important to me.”
