Cornerback Haywood Jeffires III (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) announced Monday evening that he has verbally committed to Central Arkansas.
Jeffires, the son of the former NFL receiver with the same name, chose UCA over FBS offers from New Mexico State and North Carolina State, as well as an offer from FCS Northwestern State. He was a first-team, all-district defensive back for a Dawson squad that advanced to the Texas Class 4A Division I state semifinals in December.
Jeffires, who is still 6-foot tall but has bulked up to 200 pounds since last month, visited UCA the first week of January and knew at that point that the school was right for him.
“I thought about everything, and they were the ones who really wanted me the most,” Jeffires said. “There was something about it. It was just the right fit for me, and I think I made a good choice.”
Jeffires used his size to frustrate smaller receivers, but he also used his length and speed to be a ballhawk in the secondary. He finished three interceptions in 2011, second only to teammate Jarell Crenshaw.
