Texas Tech fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Three-star La'Darius Newbold (Lancaster, Texas) is no longer wavering.
After calling Tech a soft commitment and considering other options, Newbold on Monday said he is rock solid with Tech and will sign with the Red Raiders on Wednesday. He had considered offers from Baylor, Iowa State and Arkansas and also looked into high interest from Texas.
Newbold said a home visit late last week from head coach Tommy Tuberville proved to be all the reassurance needed. Newbold said Tuberville talked how important the 6-foot, 180-pound athlete can be for the next four years, and he also discussed the opportunity of getting Newbold on the field early and often next year.
"Playing right away and starting as a true freshman in the Big 12 ... that's big," Newbold said. "Then, it was the coaching staff, too."
Newbold could see more time as a cornerback or safety than as a receiver in college. He was a second-team, all-district selection as a defensive back during his senior year at Lancaster.
