With less than two weeks until signing day, three-star cornerback John Gibson (Missouri City, Texas/Marshall) is back on the market.
Gibson on Monday said he has parted ways with Arkansas and will explore his options as signing day approaches.
A 5-foot-10, 175-pound defensive back with 4.42 speed in the 40-yard dash, Gibson will look to explore previous offers from Wyoming, Indiana, San Diego State, Minnesota and several other programs in need of a shutdown cornerback.
Gibson said the move was business, as it involved his academics. He said Arkansas officials were a little concerned with his SAT scores. Gibson said he has plans of retaking the test soon.
“It wasn’t that really that I wanted to decommit,” Gibson said, “but [offensive line coach and primary recruiter] Coach [Chris] Klenakis came to my school [Monday], and said Coach [Bobby] Petrino didn’t want to take a chance on me with my scores being low."
Gibson, who had two interceptions this season, is getting looks as a cornerback. He also was a solid receiver for Marshall, catching 20 passes for 377 yards and five touchdowns this season.
Of Gibson’s seven offers, not one is from a school in Texas. Gibson would like to change that before Feb. 1.
“I’d prefer to play close to home, but It doesn’t matter that much,” he said. “I’m just trying to get the best school with the best education I can possibly get.”
