Son of 49ers assistant visiting Wake Forest

1/20/2012

Three-star quarterback Steve Donatell (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) will have two things on his mind during his upcoming visit to Wake Forest this weekend.

First, can he call Winston-Salem, N.C. home?

Second, will his dad claim an NFC Championship ring?

Donatell is the son of Ed Donatell, who is the secondary coach for the San Francisco 49ers. While Steve would love to be in San Francisco cheering his father and the Niners on, he will be focusing on Wake Forest and what it has to offer as a student-athlete.

“This is my first official visit, so that’s exciting,” said Donatell, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound quarterback with offers from Wake Forest and Nebraska. “More than anything, I’ll get a chance to take a break from everything and just learn more about the school. If I decide Wake Forest is the school from me, I want to know in and out.”

Donatell said that he plans on coming back to Colorado early Sunday so he can catch the Niners-Giants NFC Championship game on television. He was in attendance for the Niners-Saints playoff last week.

As for his recruiting process overall, Donatell said this trip could say a lot in regards to him making a verbal commitment.

“I could end up there, but I could also end up at Nebraska,” Donatell said. “I think after seeing the [Wake Forest] campus and speaking to the coaches, I’ll have my mind made up either way. I still can’t say whether it’ll be Nebraska or Wake Forest, but I definitely feel I’ll have a decision coming home.”

Donatell led Highlands Ranch to a 9-3 record his senior year. He threw for 1,686 yards and 23 touchdowns and only tossed three interceptions. Donatell additionally rushed for 625 yards and seven touchdowns.
