Football Recruiting - Midlands Region: Vanderbilt Commodores

What many know about K.D. Cannon (Mount Pleasant, Texas/Mount Pleasant) are his stats on the field -- 104 receptions, 1,597 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns.

What many don’t know about the ESPN Watch List wide receiver are his stats away from the field -- a 3.0 grade-point average and a favorite subject of history.

SHENANDOAH, Texas -- ESPN Watch List safety Arrion Springs (San Antonio/Roosevelt) made the journey east to the Houston area to improve on his SPARQ score last season, and hopefully score an invite to The Opening, while at the Nike Football SPARQ Combine on Saturday at Woodforest Bank Stadium.

While he might not have scored what he wanted, he still put up an impressive performance.

SAN ANTONIO -- Few freshmen are able to do what running back Gabe Angel (Lebanon, Tenn./Wilson Central) can do. Then again, few freshmen are built like the 6-foot-3, 216-pound running back.

Angel can bench press 250 pounds, and while he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds at the U.S. Army National Combine on Friday, his personal-best time is 4.6 seconds.

Angel’s efforts at the combine made heads turn. During 1-on-1 drills, Angel made a beautiful, one-handed catch. He immediately followed that with another one-handed catch. All eyes were on the player wearing No. 404 in his first Army combine -- despite the fact that he’s only 15 years old.

SAN ANTONIO -- Wednesday was a day off for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl teams. Instead of working out and participating in drills, the players took in visits around the city -- including a stop at the Alamodome for photo opportunities and to see their game apparel -- and used the day to recover from two days of practice.

The teams will return to the fields on Thursday in arguably the most important practice of the week. Here are five things to keep an eye on for Thursday’s practice:

Interest rising for 2014 ATH Igbinoba

At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, 2014 athlete Kendrick Igbinoba (Richardson, Texas/Richardson) has the size and speed to play multiple positions. After playing quarterback as a sophomore in 2011, Igbinoba was one of the running backs in Richardson’s run-heavy offense this season.

The big question, as Igbinoba prepares for the off-season, involves where he will line up for the 2013 season. He was one of five players to rush at least 40 times for more than 300 yards as a junior, and he helped Richardson advanced to the Texas Class 5A Division I playoffs.

Because Richardson had to deal with early disciplinary and academic issues with players, Igbinoba was asked to play more of a leader. He now will look to improving as a player, a leader and a potential FBS recruit. Igbinoba has received correspondence from Ole Miss, Washington State, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, SMU and Arizona.

After decommitting from Colorado in October, three-star tight end Mitchell Parsons (Parker, Colo./Chaparral) has been all about finding a college home that fits him. Whether that decision comes sooner or later is still the question.

Parsons said that while he is still open with his process, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss are current front-runners. Both schools have offered the 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end, in addition to Arizona State, Cal and Northern Colorado.

“I want it over with badly,” Parsons said of the process, "but I’m going to make an educated choice. It’s stressful, for sure, but I mean, I’m glad I opened it up.”

The Huskies went into Texas and landed a safety.

The addition of three-star standout Trevor Walker (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview) provides a prominent piece to Washington’s 2013 recruiting class. But his addition means more than just adding another name to an already impressive list.

Walker announced his decision Friday. When it came time to pick a school, he selected UW over Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. He had more than 25 offers, but he chose to play college football in Seattle, one week after taking his official visit.

This weekend figures to be big for UCLA as it tries to establish a recruiting presence in Tennessee.

Three of the top prospects from the Volunteer State will travel to Los Angeles to see the Bruins host archrival USC on Saturday. One is already committed, another has said he is close to doing so, while the last could be swayed by the Bruins' storied basketball tradition.

Offensive tackle Christian Morris from Memphis (Tenn.) East committed to UCLA in July. Since then he has been pursued by many other tradition-rich schools, namely Nebraska, to which he took an official visit in September.
