Football Recruiting - Midlands Region: Clemson Tigers

While many of the large schools in Texas begin to close out their spring football schedules, most underclassmen are treated as seniors. In the same breath, many freshmen are preparing for the next level, whether it’s junior varsity or varsity play.

Kaden Smith (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus), however, isn’t your average freshman. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Smith is a big tight end who already has the attention of elite programs.

Clemson hasn't been a stranger to the Dallas area, particularly West Mesquite High School in nearby Mesquite, Texas.

Kyler Murray's sophomore year has been eventful, to say the least.

The Allen (Texas) High School quarterback led his team to a Texas Class 5A Division I state championship and has seen several schools begin to pursue him in recruiting. To date, the 2015 prospect has five scholarship offers.

In addition, he's in the middle of a baseball season, with his Allen team sitting in first place in its district on the doorstep of the state playoffs as of Monday. Though an accomplished quarterback, Murray has also been successful on the diamond, hitting .372 with 20 stolen bases this season for the Eagles while manning second base.

It's been quite a year for Murray.

Watch List DB is No. 8 for TAMU

ESPN Watch List defensive back Dylan Sumner-Gardner is many things. He’s a hard-hitting, fundamentally sound safety. He’s a budding vocal and physical leader on the field. Recently, he became a more spiritually sound person after getting baptized in January.

Most importantly, Sumner-Gardner is a maturing individual, someone who understands that your favorite thing sometimes isn’t what’s best for you. When he decommitted from Clemson -- the school he consistently called his “dream school” -- on Jan. 31, he knew then that sometimes, a favorite isn’t always the best option.

With that said, Sumner-Gardner decided to do what’s best for him on Saturday.

Just because Dylan Sumner-Gardner committed to Clemson last June doesn’t mean the 2014 safety is shutting down his recruiting process. Far from it, in fact.

For all of his life, ESPN Watch List safety Dylan Sumner-Gardner (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) knew what he wanted to do. He wanted to play college football for Clemson and follow in the footsteps of his all-time favorite football player, Brian Dawkins.

When Sumner-Gardner picked up the offer in June, he immediately gave Clemson his verbal commitment. Sumner-Gardner never expected to get an offer that could look Clemson in the eye. On Wednesday, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound safety picked up an offer from Texas A&M, a program that has been phenomenal with recruiting its 2013 class and is off to a very impressive start in 2014.

While he’s still committed to the Tigers, Sumner-Gardner now has something to think about.

It was a good junior season for athlete Armani Watts (Forney, Texas/North Forney). Not so much in the wins and losses with his team finishing at 2-8, but in other ways.

Watts, the epitome of versatility, did whatever was asked of him. He threw for 756 yards with three touchdowns. He rushed 162 times for 1,017 yards with seven scores and had eight receptions for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He also played defensive back.

That versatility has led to offers from UCLA, Clemson and North Texas. He was all set to attend OU’s junior day until the Sooners postponed it last week.

SAN ANTONIO -- In recruiting, players can hate the process one day, love it the next.

ESPN 300 defensive end Joe Mathis (Upland, Calif./Upland) has seen both sides, but is looking to make the process a past discussion.

Mathis is one of seven players expected to announce where they’ll play college football during Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome. While many feel he’s leaning toward one school, Mathis said he’s eyed four schools fairly evenly.
