Football Recruiting - Midlands Region: California Golden Bears
With three solid pickups in the month of May, Northwestern has been hot with its recruiting. The Wildcats are hoping to add to his class with rising cornerback Verkedric Vaughns (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet).
Hearing Vaughns tell it, however, a decision isn’t even close -- no matter how difficult it is for him to think about recruiting.

Running back Auston Anderson (Plano, Texas/West) committed Thursday to sign with the Northwestern Wildcats, multiple sources report. He is the second 2014 prospect from the Lone Star State to pick NU for 2014. Three-star safety Jordan Thomas (Klein, Texas/Collins) got the Wildcats' class started with his decision in December.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Anderson selected Northwestern over scholarship offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, California, Georgia Tech, Navy, Nebraska, Rice, Stanford, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UCLA, Washington and Washington State.
ESPN believes that he possesses, "a sneaky extra gear... good feel as a zone runner... the ability to exploit smaller creases... very good balance and body control... naturally good leverage and a strong lower base."
Anderson, along with Northwestern's other ungraded commitments, will be included as part of ESPN's next rankings update. The Wildcats have eight verbals at this time.

OLB Daylon Tarkington
Vital stats: 2014 / Fort Worth (Texas) Trimble Tech / 6-foot-1, 215 pounds
Considering: Interest from Arizona, Michigan, San Diego State, Texas State, Utah, Yale
Where you saw him: Next Level Athlete South DFW Video Showcase
What impressed: For a player recovering from a broken leg, Tarkington’s lateral movement and immediate burst were something to watch. Tarkington showed that he is 100 percent and ready to make some noise.
Why you should keep an eye out for him: Last season was supposed to be a coming-out party for Tarkington, but the injury set him back. This spring and summer should be his time to shine.

Wide receiver James Proche II (Dallas/Prime Prep) isn’t one of those cocky kids who enjoys referring to himself in third person. When you get to know the 2015 prospect, he’s the exact opposite.
But when Proche was asked on Sunday about his aspirations for the upcoming spring and summer, his comments turned into a declaration -- something that he’s going to hold tightly.
“This offseason, James Proche II will be the hardest-working kid in the country. I guarantee that,” Proche said. “He will become a top-five receiver in the country.”

Slot receiver T.V. Williams (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) isn’t used to running the 40-yard dash in anything higher than 4.5 seconds. So when he got word of his time of 4.6 seconds at the U.S. Army National Combine in July, he looked at it as a measuring stick and gave himself a personal message.
Get better. Quickly. And be consistently dominant.
Since January, the lightning-quick receiver has been working to show he’s one of the top players at his position. After sending highlight tapes out to programs nationwide, California co-signed with his playmaking abilities. The Golden Bears, led by head coach Sonny Dykes, extended a scholarship offer to the 5-foot-9, 155-pound sparkplug.

ESPN 300 wide receiver Dannon Cavil (San Antonio/Madison) hasn’t been bashful about saying Oklahoma is his dream school.
When he was committed to Ole Miss in the summer, the Sooners were still No. 1. After flipping to California in the fall, OU was still on his mind.
And now, days away from enrolling early, Cavil is realizing his dream. Cavil tweeted Monday afternoon he has switched his commitment one more time, pledging to the Sooners.
San Antonio Madison coach Jim Streety confirmed Cavil's plans to enroll early at OU.
“Committed to the University of Oklahoma… enroll in the next couple of days,” Cavil tweeted, followed with a picture of him in OU gear.
Cavil is OU’s fourth wide receiver commit and second in as many days. Three-star wide receiver K.J. Young (Perris, Calif./Citrus Hill) pledged to OU on Sunday afternoon.
While Young is considered a deep-play, explosive threat, Cavil brings a much different skill set to the table: size.
None of OU’s three previous receiver commits is as big as Cavil, who is 6-foot-5, 205 pounds and ranked No. 239 in the ESPN 300 and No. 35 at wide receiver. He is OU’s highest-ranked wide receiver commit.

SAN ANTONIO -- Three-star offensive guard Reeve Koehler (Honolulu/St. Louis) confirmed Thursday evening that he will not announce his commitment during Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl. His decision, however, might have received some unexpected swaying.
Kansas and Tennessee made Koehler’s final list, and on Thursday, three-star inside linebacker Colton Goeas, his high school teammate, verbally committed to Kansas. Goeas once was committed to Tennessee but decommitted from the Volunteers last month.

SAN ANTONIO -- Three-star offensive guard Reeve Koehler (Honolulu/St. Louis) has two decisions to make. First, where will he end up? Second, will he make that decision public?
The U.S. Army All-American said Tennessee and Kansas are front-runners in his recruiting process. Cal and Arkansas are on the outside looking in, primarily because he hasn’t had a chance to see them.

Four-star wide receiver Devin Lauderdale (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) was considering decommitting from Texas Tech before Tommy Tuberville took the head coaching position at Cincinnati. That news proved to be the proverbial last straw, as Lauderdale parted ways with the Red Raiders on Tuesday.
Now Lauderdale, a 5-foot-11, 173-pound speedster, is looking at visiting four schools in the next few weeks. Lauderdale said he will visit Oklahoma State on Dec. 18 and Notre Dame on Jan. 25. Cal and West Virginia also are in the mix. All four schools, Lauderdale said, have offered.
“I’m opening my options up again,” Lauderdale said. “I’m just looking to see the environments. I want to also see how the educational systems are. Mostly, I want to feel the love from the schools.”

2014 Aston Walter killing QB stereotypes

When it comes to quarterbacks needing size to play college football, 2014 Aston Walter (Crosby, Texas/Crosby) is quick to tune out the conversation.
At 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds, Walter is far from the prototypical quarterback’s size. In many eyes, he’s somewhat small as a potential running back or slot receiver. What Walter has, however, is a drive that refuses to give in to those who feel his days of playing quarterback will end in high school.
In fact, if you ask him what position he’ll play in college, Walter will give a very honest response.
