Orange made Austin Wilson a priority

5/21/2012

When Austin Wilson (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) visited Syracuse on Friday, he could tell the Orange believed he was the top quarterback on their board.

So the Orange landed their top target Sunday when Wilson committed.

“They acted like I was their No. 1 guy, and that was one of the big things I was looking for in the process,” Wilson said Monday. “I want to be someone’s No. 1 choice and that’s how they made me feel.”

Syracuse offered Wilson a few weeks ago after assistant coach Donnie Henderson visited Wilson at his school. A few years ago, Wilson visited Syracuse for a game with his brother but did not see much of the program or campus.

When Wilson arrived again this weekend, he had a chance to see the Carrier Dome and likes the idea of playing indoors.

Ryan Nassib, the Orange’s projected starter this season, is a Pennsylvania native, and Wilson had a chance to speak with him. His conversation with Nassib only strengthened Wilson’s desire to commit to Syracuse.

While on the visit, he sat down with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Nathaniel Hackett. Wilson said his biggest strength is his arm and ability to throw the deep ball, and he said that will translate well to Syracuse’s offense.

“I fits my style of play. They do a lot of check downs and progression reads, but I like to throw deep,” Wilson said. “It’s also a very balanced offense, which I like.”

Eastern Michigan also offered Wilson, and Maryland, Pittsburgh, Rutgers were showing interest and wanted Wilson to camp.
