The next big thing at the Dexter School is sophomore James Harden, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound offensive lineman who already is drawing national attention.
“I think he's gonna be a huge recruit,” Dexter School coach Casey Day said. “Height, weight, strength, where he's at technically, how much he likes football -– he's got all the tools. He's got what everybody's looking for.”
Hendren, who lives in Medfield, Mass., has played on the defensive line but likely will be recruited to play offensive tackle.
“He's excellent at pass protection,” Day said. “He's got big, long arms. A powerful punch, and he's a great drive blocker at the point of attack.”
The Dexter School, a prep school in Brookline, Mass., has three other linemen with Division I potential:
The 6-3, 260-pound junior played guard and defensive end last season, when he was named the Lineman of the Year in his league. He transferred to the Dexter School after spending his sophomore season at Westwood (Mass.) High School.
“He was tremendous both ways for us,” Day said. “He's definitely an interior lineman offensively or defensively. He could definitely put on another 30 or 40 pounds.
“The feedback I've received from coaches is that he's not an overwhelming prospect like Hendren will be, but at the very least he's an FCS kid. A lot of coaches want to see him in camp. Right now he's getting looked at by all the schools in the Northeast.”
The 6-5, 250-pound junior is No. 1 in his class academically and has drawn early interest from several Ivy League schools.
The 6-6, 260-pound sophomore was used at guard last season.
“The other two [Hinds and DiNicola] are good players but aren't at the same level as Hendren and Toubekis,” Day said.
Shumate ready to announce
Four-star safety Elijah Shumate (Ramsey, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) said he will announce his college decision Saturday during the U. S. Army All-American Bowl.
South Carolina, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Rutgers are the final four schools Shumate was considering. Notre Dame reportedly is recruiting him to play running back.
