Junior Thadd Smith nets two early offers

With his season just recently coming to an end, 2014 athlete Thadd Smith (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) will be a little busier with the recruiting process. He already has two offers.

Rutgers and Temple have extended offers to the 5-foot-8, 163-pound Smith, and the Owls will host him for a visit on Saturday.

“It’s close to home, really it’s right there,” Smith said. “They keep in contact, coach [Ryan] Day and I got a good relationship. And they’re doing OK this season. I think in a few more years they’ll be one of the top teams probably.”

The Owls offered Smith while at a camp this summer, and Rutgers did the same. Rutgers recruits across the Delaware River often, and signed Philadelphia-area running back Desmon Peoples in 2012. Smith is friends with Peoples.

At 7-1 and No. 23 in the BCS rankings, Smith likes the direction Rutgers is going under first-year coach Kyle Flood.

“They impress me with how good they’re doing,” he said. “I like the coaching staff, Coach Flood is a good coach, and I like their uniforms. They’re competing with Oregon.”

Smith plays running back, receiver, slot and cornerback but feels his future is brightest on offense. Smith led the team with 12 total touchdowns and 426 receiving yards. He also added 362 yards on the ground.

West Virginia will host Smith and teammate Dashawn Darden for a visit Nov. 17 for the Oklahoma game. Smith already visited Boston College, his first college visit, and said he’s “never seen anything like it.”

Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, Pittsburgh and South Carolina are the other teams Smith reports interest from.
