'Tenacious' LB Al-Rasheed Benton to WVU

10/22/2012

Defense has clearly been an issue at West Virginia, so following a fourth consecutive Saturday when the Mountaineers allowed at least 45 points, they received some good news on the recruiting -- and defensive -- front.

Four-star inside linebacker Al-Rasheed Benton (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X. Shabazz) committed to the Mountaineers on Monday, Shabazz coach Darnell Grant said.

Benton took an official visit to West Virginia on Sept. 28 for the Baylor game.

“He had his official visit and he came home and he and his parents -- his parents went with him -- they talked about [a decision] real hard and decided it was the best fit for him,” Grant said.

It was the only official visit for Benton as the Mountaineers have been his top school for a while. Arizona State and Penn State are just a few of the schools to offer the 6-foot-2, 230-pound Benton.

A contributor since his freshman season at Shabazz, Grant said the Mountaineers are getting a player who will bring attitude to a defense.

“He’s one of the most tenacious guys I’ve ever coached,” Grant said. “Not many guys enjoy contact as much as he does.”

Benton is No. 16 nationally among linebackers and No. 12 overall in New Jersey.

The second-highest rated player in West Virginia’s class, Benton joins a talented trio of linebackers committed to the Mountaineers’ 2013 class. Four-star linebackers Benton, Hodari Christian and Darrien Howard are all committed to West Virginia.
