Taquan Mizzell announced what most of the recruiting world had long belived. He is committed to Virginia.
Mizzell, No. 85 in the ESPN 150 and the nation's No. 10 running back, made his decision on Tuesday afternoon, choosing the Cavaliers over North Carolina and West Virginia. The announcement was hardly a surprise. The four-star tailback from Virginia Beach (Va.) Bayside had long said Virginia was the leader for his services. He said he was relatively sure he would commit to Virginia for weeks, if not months, but wanted to go through the recruiting process.
In the end, he couldn't pass up Virginia.
"For three reasons," Mizzell said. "My relationship with coach (Mike) London, the education part and it was the best fit for me overall."
All along, Mizzell trusted London.
"It's a great relationhship," Mizzell said. "He wants to make me a better person on and off the field."
Early playing time was also a factor. When Virginia coaches promised an opportunity to compete next season, Mizzell was that much closer to being a Cav.
"I know I'll get the chance to play as a true freshman," he said. "That was a big deal for me. Once I had the talk with coaches, I knew that's what I wanted to do."
Mizzell didn't take many trips to other schools. Oddly enough, he often said West Virginia was second for his services even though he never visited the school. North Carolina, which he did visit, came in third.
"Being close to home just gave me a chance, my coaches and all my supporters a chance to play," said Mizzell, who has several friends on Virginia's team.
Mizzell's season starts Friday. He said it was important to commit before it began He said he doesn't plan to take anymore official visits.
