ESPN 150 RB Williams favoring seven

David Williams (Philadelphia/Imhotep Charter) has 21 offers and has remained open since offer No. 1 came in. Though the list will change, Williams now has a lead group of seven teams that have already made an impression on him.

In no order, Auburn, Miami (Fla.), Notre Dame, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin are at the top of the 6-foot-1, 183-pound ESPN 150 running back’s list.

This past weekend, Williams made his first visit to Wisconsin to check out a Badgers’ practice. As a running back, it is hardly surprising he was thrilled watching the Badgers offense operate.

“They were pounding the rock. … That’s what I’m looking for – a pro-style offense, me carrying the load, just taking over when the team needs it,” Williams said.

Williams was able to sit down and have lunch with arguably Wisconsin’s two best recruiters when it comes to bringing in a back. Heisman finalist Montee Ball and fellow back James White both talked to Williams, ranked No. 12 among backs nationally, about coming to Wisconsin.

“They were saying how they have a great running back tradition,” Williams said of their conversation. “If you start at running back [at Wisconsin] you got a big chance of making it to the NFL."

Of Williams’ top seven, Wisconsin and Penn State are the only two programs Williams has visited. Williams might make it to Penn State again Saturday for the spring game.

Auburn and Miami are the two latest offers for Williams and immediately catapulted near the top of his list.

“They also run a pro-style offense and produce NFL running backs,” he said of the Hurricanes, which made a visit to Williams’ school Tuesday.

Auburn running backs coach Curtis Luper has talked with Williams on the phone a few times.

“It’s just a great program. I loved them since Cam Newton was there, but I could see myself fitting in there,” Williams said.

Pittsburgh coaches made a visit to Williams’ school Monday, but Williams was absent from school battling an illness.
