Anthony Averett with Alabama offer

3/13/2012

Anthony Averett's recruitment just kicked up a notch.

No offense to the other schools that have offered him a scholarship, but when the defending national champions offer, it's time to take notice.

“It was exciting actually, talking to Nick Saban,” Averett said of a weekend conversation in which he was offered a scholarship by Alabama. “I didn't know what to do. They want me to come down in the summer or the spring. They said I'll love it down there. I'll find out more when I get down there.”

Averett, an athlete prospect from Woodbury (N.J.) High School who could play a number of positions, also has scholarship offers from Rutgers, Syracuse, West Virginia, South Florida, Temple, Old Dominion and East Carolina.

With those offers and more surely to come, 'Bama will have to battle to land Averett even if they do have championship trophies to showcase. Nearby Rutgers looks to also be a factor.

“I like Rutgers,” the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Averett said. “I like the facilities. I like the new coaching staff.”

West Virginia's offense, as it often does, will keep the Mountaineers in the conversation with most skill-position prospects.

“I like West Virginia,” Averett said. “I like how the offense plays, high tempo. They score a lot of points.”

Averett said he doesn't have any visits planned yet but they'll be coming. He said distance from home won't be a factor in his recruitment. That's good news for Alabama, who is pitching graduation rate as much as playing time.

“He was going on about academics,” Averett said of the conversation with Saban.

Perhaps, but Alabama''s winning ways will surely be discussed soon.
