John Robinson commits to UMass

1/24/2012

John Robinson (Springfield, Mass./Worcester Academy) became the fifth Worcester Academy player from the Class of 2012 to commit to a Division I school Tuesday when he announced that he has accepted a scholarship to play for the University of Massachusetts.

Robinson was recruited as both a linebacker and a running back, but Worcester Academy coach Dave Dykeman said Robinson will play defense at UMass.

“UMass has been a dream school of mine for a while,” Robinson said. “It's close to home and I've been to a lot of games there. I've always liked the whole feel of UMass. I'm just happy to be a Minuteman right now.”

Robinson, who missed most of his junior season with a torn ACL, also had offers from Albany, Holy Cross, Colgate and Lafayette. He canceled his official visit to Holy Cross this weekend and will take his official to UMass instead.

“The injury is a non issue,” Robinson said. “I'm wrestling right now.”

Wide receiver Canaan Severin (Virginia), linebacker Steven Daniels (Boston College), defensive back Jordan Lucas (Penn State) and linebacker Corey Majors (Villanova) are the other Worcester Academy players expected to sign with Division I programs on national signing day.

Robinson played high school football at Springfield (Mass.) Cathedral before transferring to Worcester Academy.
