This is not the way Bob Huggins envisioned West Virginia’s opening season in the Big 12 would play out.

Heading into Wednesday’s game against Baylor, the Mountaineers have just four regular season games remaining and currently sit in seventh place with a 6-8 conference record and 13-14 mark overall.

They’ve struggled offensively, to say the least, shooting a collective .405 from the field (294th in the country), handing out just 12.2 assists per game (218th in the country) and scoring only 65.8 points per contest (220th in the country).

West Virginia’s open-post motion offense is the same five-out set Huggins has been running since his days at Cincinnati. While the system is versatile enough to adapt to its personnel, the essence of the offense is that it provides premium court spacing and player movement in order to open up the lane and create opportunities to attack the basket.

Attacking the basket hasn’t been easy this year, though, as guards like Juwan Staten and Jabarie Hinds haven’t been able to consistently make plays off the bounce while the frontcourt tandem of Aaric Murray and Deniz Kilicli has underachieved throughout the season.

The good news for West Virginia fans is that help is on the way, especially along the frontline with four frontcourt recruits having signed in November.
