TCU lands local ESPN 100 center

10/8/2012

ESPN 100 center Karviar Shepherd (Dallas/Prime Prep Academy), the No. 46 overall prospect in the Class of 2013, has committed to TCU over Texas A&M, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma.

"I picked TCU because it was close to home and I really like the coaching staff," said Shepherd, who played travel ball with the Urban DFW Elite. "They really do a great job of improving bigs like they did at Stanford with the Lopez twins."

Shepherd will provide first-year Horned Frogs coach Trent Johnson with a true center who has rapidly improved and is one of the best rebounders and defenders in the class. He is a blue-collar player who makes his presence felt simply by being physical and going to get the ball in a crowd. He is also an excellent low-post position defender and blocks shots on the ball or coming to the aid of a teammate from the weak side.

On offense, Shepherd runs the floor well and is a powerful finisher above the rim. His offensive back-to-the-basket moves and footwork are getting better with every workout. He also plays with great effort and energy on both ends of the floor and is a excellent leader and teammate.

Johnson has already done a great job on the recruiting trail locally in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area, which is loaded with high-major players year in and year out. In addition to Shepherd, Johnson has shooting guard Brandon Parrish (Arlington, Texas/Juan Seguin) in the fold as a big-time shooter with size and bounce.

The Horned Frogs now have two huge pieces in place as they make the move to the Big 12.
