Scout's take: PG Tejada to East Carolina
By Reggie Rankin
ESPN 100 PG Lance Tejada (Hollywood, Fla./Blanche Ely) committed to East Carolina over offers from Lehigh, Alabama, Murray State and Tennessee Tech, among others, while on his official visit.
The four-star Tejada has the talent and potential to be an immediate contributor for Pirates head coach Jeff Lebo.
Why did he pick East Carolina and what will he bring to the Pirates? Let's break it down.
Lance Tejada gives East Carolina a versatile point guard who competes at both ends of the floor.
Why he committed: "I thought East Carolina was the best overall fit for me as a player and person. Coach Lebo was straightforward with me, and he was a point guard when he played, and that will help my game a lot," Tejada said.
What he brings: Tejada, who goes about 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, is a true point guard who plays extremely hard. He pushes the ball on the break, can facilitate in the halfcourt and he can knock down open jumpers with range to the arc. Tejada earned his way into the ESPN 100 #96 overall by having a terrific spring at the Bob Gibbons TOC, where he averaged more than 20 points and close to 8 assist per game throughout the weekend.
How he fits: Tejada will be provide coach Lebo with a guard who can play fast or slow, who is smart and a smooth operator, especially on the offensive end of the floor. Tejada will allow Lebo to include him in the offensive scoring options, in addition to running the show and and making plays for himself or others at end-of-clock and -game situations. Expect Tejada's game to go to another level under Lebo's tutelage.
Reminds us of: At times we see Tejada as a Norris Cole type of guard, because he is a smart overachiever who can handle, pass, make open shots and make plays on the offensive side of the ball. Tejada competes on both ends like Cole, as well.
How the class is shaping up: Tejada is the Pirates' first 2014 commit, but expect Lebo to build this class now that he has the point guard of the future on board. Others who might still be on the Pirates big board could be ESPN 100 SF James Demery (Greenville, N.C./Northside Christian Academy) PF Gary Clark (Clayton, N.C.) and SG Che Bob (Charlotte, N.C./Arlington Country day).
