Texas-El Paso added 7-foot center Matt Willms (Leamington, Ont./Findlay College Prep) to its 2012 class on Monday, head coach Tim Floyd announced.
Willms helped the Pilots win their third ESPN National High School Invitational in April and finish the season 32-1. He led the team with 46 blocked shots.
"We weren't going to sign a player unless we felt he had a chance to be a first team all-league guy," Floyd said. "Matt has the tools to become that at some point in his career. He can really run, he has great hands and a great touch. As he gets stronger his impact on the game could become significant. He's only been playing organized basketball the last two years, but he has the tools to excel at UTEP."
Willms joins fellow signees Twymond Howard (Pearl, Miss./Pearl H.S.), Chris Washburn (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie H.S) and Dustin Watts (Seattle, Wash./Stoneridge Prep) in the Miners incoming class.
