Vanderbilt reels in three four-star recruits

Vanderbilt signed a three-player class on Wednesday, coach Kevin Stallings announced.

Leading the way for the Commodores is ESPN 100 PG Riley LaChance (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central) along with four-star SG Matthew Fisher-Davis (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) and four-star PG Wade Baldwin (Hillsborough, N.J./St. Joseph).

"I'm very excited about the three young men that are signing with us," Stallings said in a press release. "All three are great kids from great families, and we're excited about the help that they'll bring to the perimeter of next year's team and really proud of my staff of going out and doing a good job landing these guys."

The Commodores are currently ranked No. 25 in ESPN.com's RecruitingNation Top 40.

Analysis: Kell a big pickup for Aztecs

Trey Kell (San Diego/St. Augustine) is yet another example of the notion of "it's not where you start out, it's where you end up."

Kell was a virtual unknown during his junior campaign. Most pundits didn't feel he was a high-major player, let alone a Top 100 player, but we felt differently. And after a scintillating spring and summer, Vanderbilt, Gonzaga, Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Arizona would join San Diego State in the Kell sweepstakes.

Scout's take: Dores add LaChance

Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings is assembling one of the nation’s most under-rated recruiting classes, adding ESPN 100 guard Riley LaChance (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield) on Monday night. The No. 22 point guard became the third prospect to commit to the Commodores in the 2014 class.

Top five undervalued classes

Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings landed a commitment from his second four-star prospect in as many weeks over the weekend when Matthew Fisher-Davis (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) joined Wade Baldwin (Hillsborough, N.J./St. Joseph).

With a pair of four-star prospects now on board in mid-September, Stallings’ class is considered good, but not great, by most national standards.

But the reality is that each school comes into the summer with different needs and priorities, and ultimately those objectives are tied to winning basketball games, not class rankings. Coaches consider fit, style, personnel, and a variety of other variables.

For Vanderbilt, that means looking for high-character guys who fit their system and culture. Given that approach, the Commodores are one of five schools off that couldn't hope to be off to a better start.

When we first spotted him in the spring, ESPN 100 Riley LaChance's offers were from all mid-major programs. By way of strong performances with his Ray Allen select AAU team in the summer, LaChance's recruiting has skyrocketed to all of the power-six conferences. LaChance has taken official visits to Vanderbilt, and Creighton and plans to visit Baylor, Iowa and Minnesota soon.

Let’s break down his game and see what he does best and where he still needs to improve.

Each week, Starting 5 takes you on a tour of the recruiting landscape. It delves into topics, recruiting trends and stories. This edition focuses on the Utah Utes' recent run of commitments, emotional toughness in recruits and tells you what happened on last weekend's commitment spree.

Utah could have one in Kuzma

Dave Telep/ESPN Kyle Kuzma grew six inches and became a bigger prospect. Utah noticed early.
The Utah Utes last weekend added a player that isn’t nationally known – yet – but is significant to the future of the program. Small forward Kyle Kuzma (Burton, Mich./Rise Academy) is one of those neat stories that manage to fly under the radar until that first breakout week on the scene in college. Consider yourself warned.

Staley to play two at Mississippi State

June, 15, 2013

AM ET
Elijah Staley (Marietta, Ga./Wheeler), a four-star, dual-threat quarterback on the gridiron and a three-star small forward on the hardwood, has committed to play both football and basketball for the Bulldogs, the Clarion Ledger reports.

"I love the whole college town," he said. "It seems like one big family there. I love their facilities and love their coaching staff for both basketball and football. It's SEC and the fan base down there is ridiculous."

The 6-foot-6, 208-pound standout originally committed to Vanderbilt in April but went back on the market in May after it became apparent that the Commodores wanted him to focus on one sport.

Appalachian State, Boston College, Marshall, Massachusetts and Virginia were his other football offers.

Staley is a key addition for the Bulldogs, who recently lost their prized quarterback recruit from 2013. Four-star Cord Sandberg (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round of the Major League Baseball Draft and signed for $725,000.

Mississippi State has nine commitments for 2014.

Vandy adds late addition to 2013 class

Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings added a late commitment to the Commodores' 2013 class earlier this week, according to The Tennessean.

Six-foot-10 power forward Luke Kornet (Argyle, Texas/Liberty Christian) chose Vanderbilt after considering interest from SMU, Kansas State, Purdue and TCU. He is the son of former Vanderbilt player Frank Kornet, who was All-SEC in the late 1980s.

"I think it's awesome," the elder Kornet told the paper. "It's hard to describe how it's coming full circle again. I'm really happy for Luke. I think it's a great fit. I've always tried to, for the most part, stay out of it. But at same time, you'd love for them to be part of that -- something you were a part of once and holds a special place in your heart."

Kornet joins ESPN 100 PF Damian Jones (Baton Rouge, La./Scotlandville Magnet).

Senior point guard Darius Thompson (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Blackman) has decided to re-open his recruitment and is no longer committed to Vanderbilt, according to the Daily News Journal (Murfreesboro, Tenn.).

Vanderbilt recently landed transfer point guard Eric McClellan (Tulsa), which played in to Thompson's decision to decommit.

"At the time of his commitment we didn't know (about McClellan)," Darius' father Lonnie Thompson told the paper. "We overlooked it. We though he was competing with (current guard) Kedren Johnson."
