Miami adds D.C. shooting guard

Miami landed a verbal commitment from Class of 2014 shooting guard James Palmer (Washington, D.C./St. John's) on Monday, ESPN.com has confirmed.

Palmer held offers from Radford, Rutgers, St. Joseph's and Towson, among others. He joins ESPN 100 SG Adonys Henriquez (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep) in the Hurricanes' 2014 class.
When the July evaluation period ended five days ago, the recruiting news was just getting started.

The biggest news of the week in the Northeast region centered around the commitment of Phil Booth to Villanova, planned visits for Isaiah Whitehead, and trimmed lists from both Kaleb Joseph and Ja'Quan Newton. But the news on those ESPN 100 guards was really just the tip of the iceberg because there have been plenty of other commitments, offers and scheduled visits coming across the wires.

Two-sport star picks Virginia Tech

Point guard Devin Wilson (McKees Rock, Pa./Montour) will continue his basketball career after committing to Virginia Tech, multiple sources report.

Wilson, who also excels in football, had basketball offers from George Mason and Saint Joseph's and football offers from Akron, N.C. State and Ohio.

The Hokies were able to give Wilson a scholarship after the departure of Robert Brown, who recently transferred from Virginia Tech, according to the Daily Press.

Mater Dei guard picks Butler

Senior guard Elijah Brown (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) verbally committed to Butler on Thursday night. Mater Dei head coach Gary McKnight confirmed the news to the Orange County Register.

SG Ahmad Fields picks Utah

Shooting guard Ahmad Fields (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy) ended his recruitment on Friday with a verbal pledge to Utah, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Fields chose the Utes over USC, Colorado, St. Joseph's and Drexel, among others.

"I felt comfortable on my visit," he told the paper. "I had a great visit, and family is an important thing. It's me and my mom, so I wanted to go where I felt I fit, and I felt it at Utah."

Fields is the fifth recruit for the Utes in 2013, joining guard's Parker Van Dyke (Salt Lake City/East), Brandon Miller (Salt Lake City/Brighton) and Delon Wright (Lawndale, Calif./City College of San Francisco) along with center Marko Kovacevic (Scottsbluff, Neb./Western Nebraska C.C.).

SF Kamall Richards picks Xavier

Three-star small forward Kamall Richards (Henryville, Pa./South Kent) will play in the Atlantic-10 after committing to Xavier on Tuesday. He announced his decision on www.sny.tv.

The 6-foot-6 Richards chose the Musketeers over Penn State, St. Joe's, Duquesne and Seton Hall.

"The coaching staff was really cool, the players, the guys are real cool," he said. "It's a nice campus, nice city, I liked everything about it really."

Richars is the first recruit for Xavier and head coach Chris Mack in the 2013 class.

Tevon Saddler commits to Greensboro

Baltimore-area small forward Tevon Saddler (St. Frances Academy) gave UNC-Greensboro a verbal commitment on Sunday, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Saddler made his decision after his official visit on Saturday. He also held offers from Delaware, St. Joseph's, South Florida and Southen Miss.

"It feels great," Saddler told the paper. "I just want to say thanks to everyone for helping me."

UNCG head coach Wes Miller now has four players who will sign with the Spartans in November. Joining Saddler are SF Tyrone Outlaw (Roxboro, N.C./Person County), SG Clay Byrd (Connelly Springs, N.C./Eat Burke) and PG Diante Baldwin (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian).

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, 6-foot-8 power forward Jai Williams (Philadelphia/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology) committed to St. Joseph's on Monday over offers from LaSalle, VCU, Temple, Drexel and Niagara.

"I wanted to stay close to home, so my family could come see me play," Williams told the paper. "My family wanted that, too, but even if they didn't I still would have wanted to stay. I like it around here."

New Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber landed his first recruit from the 2013 class on Sunday with a verbal pledge from small forward Alex Etherington (Arcadia, Ind./Hamilton Heights).

The 6-foot-6 Etherington chose the Wildcats over New Mexico, Xavier, Boston College, Boston University and St. Joseph's. His decision came while on an unofficial visit over the weekend.

"When I was there, I fell in love with everything about it," he told the Indianapolis Star. "There weren't any negatives. Everything felt right."

Etherington averaged 22.1 points as a junior in 2011-12 after suffering a severe head injury while attempting a slam dunk as a sophomore.
Sophomore guard Isaiah Washington (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport H.S.) decided to end his recruitment early after verbally committing to Penn State on Sunday.

According to the Williamsport Sun Gazette, Washington was offered a scholarship by head coach Pat Chambers on an unofficial visit last week.

"I decided I just knew Penn State was where I wanted to go. After my visit, it was obvious," Washington told the paper. "The academics were one of the main things that sold me. Coach Chambers and his plans for Penn State, I would love to be a part of something like that."

Washington held offers from George Mason, James Madison and St. Joseph's. He is the first 2014 recruit for Chambers and his staff.
