Kansas State adds 2-star guard

Class of 2013 point guard Nigel Johnson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) committed to Kansas State over the weekend just a few weeks after decommitting from George Washington, according to the Washington Post.

Johnson, who originally chose GW in October, wound up picking K-State over Missouri.

"I talked it over with my family and we all felt like it was a good choice where I could go in and make an impact as a freshman, and that's what I was looking for," Johnson told the paper. "It was almost neck and neck, but Kansas State had a slight lead. Once I had a chance to see who was going where and seeing that Missouri would have three point guards, that just made it one hundred percent that I was going to Kansas State."

Johnson is expected to visit Kansas State this week and sign his letter of intent shortly thereafter. He joins a class that includes SG Wesley Iwundu (Houston/Westfield), SG Marcus Foster (Wichita Falls, Texas/Hirschi), PG Jevon Thomas (Queens, N.Y./St. John's NW Military) and C Neville Fincher (Teaneck, N.J./Hargrave Military).

Post-grad forward Josh Hearlihy (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Northfield-Mt. Hermon) has committed to Tulane, ESPN.com has confirmed.

Hearlihy originally signed with Utah in 2012 before being released by the Utes and deciding to spend a post-graduate year in Massachusetts. He chose the Green Wave over Drake, George Washington, Santa Clara and Davidson.

"I didn't find anything I didn't like," he told the Los Angeles Times. "I'm excited to go there."

Hearlihy averaged 11.3 points and 5.2 rebounds at Northfield-Mt. Hermon.

New South Carolina head coach Frank Martin landed another recruit for his incoming class over the weekend. Forward Michael Carrera (Venezuela/Montrose Christian) committed to the Gamecocks while on his official visit Saturday.

"It's a great campus, great people, great coaches," Carrera told the Spartanburg (S.C.) Herald-Journal. "My future teammates are great. I feel really comfortable; they are really good guys. I was looking for that place for a long, long time and I found it. It's going to be a great four years at South Carolina."

Carrera chose South Carolina over Gonzaga, Virginia Tech, George Mason, George Washington and Richmond. He averaged 13.0 points and 12.0 rebounds as a senior at national power Montrose Christian in Rockville, Md.

He is the sixth incoming recruit for Martin, joining center Laimonas Chatkevicius (Lithuania/South Kent School), center Tyrone Haughton (Miami/Dr. Krop), small forward Thaddeus Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson), small forward Minda Kacinas (Wichita, Kan./Word of Life) and point guard Tarik Phillip (Brooklyn, N.Y./Queen City Prep).

ESPN 60 point guard Kevin Zabo (Gatineau, Que.) will be transferring from Montrose Christian to Brewster Academy following his recently completed sophomore year, ESPN.com's Adam Finkelstein is reporting.

Zabo will be returning to the New England prep ranks after spending his freshman season at St. Mark’s School where he played with Alex Murphy (Duke), Kaleb Tarczewski (Arizona) and Nik Stauskas (Michigan).

Zabo’s father, Ndavo Zeph Zabo, spoke with ESPN.com on Tuesday night and was emphatic that this latest move had nothing to do with basketball.

“This was a family decision and basketball was not a concern,” he said. “As parents, we are attached to structured and integrated boarding schools, such as our previous experience at St. Mark’s, that we personally prefer to a school house system.”

Zabo had a highly successful sophomore season at Montrose, holding down the team’s starting point guard position and being instrumental in their run to the semifinals of the ESPNHS NHSI.

“Kevin was in very good hands with legendary Coach Vetter,” Zeph Zabo said. “He was doing pretty well academically, appreciating his teammates, and learning a lot from the coaching staff. He is grateful.”

Now, Zabo will become the latest in a long line of highly talented point guards to run the show for Brewster Academy and head coach Jason Smith, who led the Bobcats to their second National Prep Championship in 2012.

“I’m ecstatic to have Kevin coming to Brewster,” Smith said. “I know he will be a tremendous addition to our school and that our basketball program will be in wonderful hands with him leading us from the point guard position.”

Zabo is currently the 37th ranked prospect and 9th point guard in the national class of 2014. He claims current scholarship offers from West Virginia and George Washington while also attracting interest from as many as 30 different other schools including Georgetown, Connecticut, Florida, Arizona, UCLA, Texas, and numerous others.
