Northeast recruiting news and notes
By Adam Finkelstein
This week’s edition of the northeast news and notes isn’t nearly as long as last week’s, but there were still some very notable developments. Also, if you missed it earlier in the week, please check out the meaning of a scholarship offer and keep that in mind while reading the latest offers and buzz on the region’s top recruits.
Incoming Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) 2015 forward Aaron Falzon is seeing his recruitment go to another level with recent offers from Georgia and Rutgers. Falzon has been starting alongside Abdul-Malik Abu on the Expressions Elite team that is currently 9-0 in EYBL play.
No. 20 junior Goodluck Okonoboh (Boston/Wilbraham & Monson) heard from Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski Wednesday night. The Blue Devils are now actively recruiting the nation’s top shot-blocker.
College coaches are keeping tabs on Tyler Nelson due to his lethal stroke from the outside.
Central Catholic (Mass.) 2014 SG Tyler Nelson has earned praise for his shooting at the EYBL and several schools have taken notice. He held an offer from Dartmouth and added one from Jacksonville last week.
Last week we talked about the recruiting explosion of Phelps (Pa.) forward Terry Larrier, one of the prospects who predicted would be a breakout candidate in April. Fellow Pennsylvanian Mikal Bridges, a swingman from Grand Valley, is another hot prospect and has lived up to those expectations. He recently landed offers from South Carolina, Seton Hall, Virginia Tech, Charlotte and Old Dominion.
Redemption Christian Angel Delgado has established himself as one of the premier rebounders in the EYBL and interest from D-I programs has increased as a result, with Virginia, Florida State, Seton Hall and Dayton joining Manhattan in pursuit of the 2014 forward from Massachusetts.
Our Savior New American (N.Y.) star Cheick Diallo is firmly establishing himself as one of the top big men in the Class of 2015. He added Florida to his list this week after picking up offers from Texas, Kansas, and Louisville last week.
Haverford (Pa.) 2015 combo guard Shawn Alston landed an early high-major offer from Penn State. The Nittany Lions last week reportedly offered 2014 PG Jamil Hood from Green Tech (NY).
A week after being offered by Dartmouth, Jamesville-Dewitt (N.Y.) guard Jafar Kinsey scored another one from Albany while making an unofficial visit. The playmaking guard is being recruited by the better part of the Ivy League as well.
Eastern Regional (N.J.) forward Matt Klinewski is another academic prospect building momentum on the recruiting trail. He took trips to a pair of Patriot League campuses this week in Lafayette and Holy Cross.
Minnesota continues to grow its recruiting presence in the northeast, making its latest scholarship offer to Wade Baldwin of St. Joseph’s of Metuchen (N.J.). Baldwin also has Virginia Tech, Rutgers and Penn State hot on his trail.
A couple of weeks after helping Sports U to the Pittsburgh Jam Fest championship and picking up offers from Holy Cross and Old Dominion in the process, St. Anthony (N.J.) PG Tarin Smith pushed his recruitment to the Atlantic 10 level with an offer from LaSalle.
Cushing Academy (Mass.) 2014 swingman Idris Taqqee scored his second D-I offer this week as Towson joined Vermont.
