2014 SG Demery has tools coaches love
By Reggie Rankin
College coaches searching for a true two-way player should look no further than Northside Christian Academy (Charlotte) wing James Demery. The 2014 wing is an explosive scorer who can get to the rim at will and uses his athletic ability to lock down opponents at the other end.
He has played extremely well for Team Charlotte on the AAU circuit, and his recruiting has picked up significantly as a direct result of how well he has performed.
2014 SF James Demery has offers from the likes of Virginia Tech and Tennessee.
Demery claims offers from Virginia Tech, Tennessee, UNC-Charlotte, Oklahoma State, East Carolina and St. Joseph’s as well as interest from Cincy, Xavier, Tulsa, Florida State and Florida Golf Coast.
After evaluating him at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions, it’s easy to see why teams are lining up for Demery, who finished his junior season averaging 20 points and five rebounds.
The 6-foot-5, 197-pounder has excellent athleticism and plays with great energy. In transition, he sprints the floor and finishes above the rim with his explosive leaping ability. In the halfcourt set, Demery is an excellent scorer as he moves well without the ball and can create his own shot off the bounce. Demery gets to the rim by beating his defender with a quick first step or spins and elevates in the lane over defenders with ease. Demery also is a strong straight-line driver who can finish through contact on a consistent basis. He is great at drawing fouls because he is in full attack mode on every catch.
Demery also makes his presence felt on the defensive end of the floor, utilizing a very good defensive stance while suffocating ballhandlers with intense ball pressure. He is athletic enough to stay in front of offensive players as he gives consistent effort at that end of the floor. Demery can easily defend both wing positions and can even contain point guards in switch-off situations.
"I can get to the rim and I can defend and stop players; (those are) my strengths,” Demery said. “I still need to work to make my jumper more consistent."
Demery has the type of game that coaches at the next level get excited about due to his motor, energy, ability to score and defend multiple positions. Being a former college coach I know that type of package will be in high demand. Demery’s stock is rising quickly and you can expect the offers to continue piling in.
