Illinois-bound PF comes full circle

This past Saturday night was an undeniable setback for Austin Colbert (Gladstone, N.J./Gill St. Bernard’s), but one that should be taken in the context of what has been a successful senior season for the Illinois-bound power forward.

Colbert put up just seven points and four boards in a 69-56 loss to Ridge High School in the finals of the Somerset County Tournament, while Ridge center Hugh Morris finished with a game-high 27 points and added nine rebounds.

If you hadn’t seen Colbert play a high school game since last year, you might not be surprised by those numbers. But the reality is that Colbert’s senior season has been one of major growth. And while performances like Saturday’s had become somewhat the norm a year ago, they are certainly the exception this season.

It’s been a long journey to get to this point for Colbert, whose high school career began almost four years ago amid anticipation and high expectations.
