Xavier landed its first commitment from the Class of 2013, snagging a verbal pledge from Kamall Richards (Newark, N.J./South Kent School) on Tuesday.
Richards is a 6-foot-6 small forward in his first post-grad year at South Kent after previously starring for St. Benedict’s in New Jersey.
Richards is a physical left-handed swingman who comes well equipped with an efficient driving game. He’s worked hard over the last year to diversify his game, specifically extending his skills to the perimeter. He has the potential to evolve into an equally dangerous defender at the next level.
“Kamall isn’t the same player he was a year ago at St. Benedict’s and he’s not the same player he was when he first arrived at South Kent on September 5th,” South Kent head coach Kelvin Jefferson said. “With his toughness and his desire to get better, he’s only going to continue to improve.”
The post-graduate year gave Richards an extra season on the grassroots circuit and he emerged as one of the biggest stories in the Northeast during last April’s evaluation period. He displayed his newfound consistent 3-point range while running with We R 1 in the Under Armour Championship Series.
Following big performances at the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia Jam Fests, Richards’ recruitment jumped to the high-major level, until he recently narrowed his decision to Xavier and St. Joseph’s.
His commitment to Xavier gives the Musketeers the 2013 swingman they so badly coveted, while also providing head coach Chris Mack with his latest high-major caliber talent. Another plus for Xavier, it appears Richards best basketball is very clearly still in front of him.
