Malone a hot candidate
By Nick Borges
Vivek Ranadive has relinquished his minority stake in the Golden State Warriors after becoming the majority owner of the Sacramento Kings. Once it becomes official in the next week he needs to decide who stays in basketball operations, including the coaching staff.
There have been a few reports claiming Ranadive may hire former Warriors' executive Chris Mullin to run the Kings' basketball operations and now we get word from Ric Bucher that another Golden State employee could be hired.
Bucher writes: "Mike Malone is on his list of candidates to be the Kings' next head coach, a source said."
Keith Smart is signed through 2013-14, however it is expected that he will be let go like the majority of basketball operations. Malone was a hot name last year and once again his name has been mentioned with most of the current head coach vacancies, including the Clippers. Malone is reportedly the highest paid assistant in the NBA.
Ramona ShelburneWhy Malone may be Clippers next head coach
"It's no wonder then that Malone's name has floated to the top of the early lists of candidates for the Clippers job, now that Vinny Del Negro has officially been let go. The lead assistant for the Golden State Warriors has always been regarded as a shrewd tactician, but the extra warm fuzzy feelings from Chris Paul don't hurt his case. Monty Williams, for one, thinks his time is overdue. ... Williams said he hired Malone as an assistant on his staff in New Orleans because of the way he saw him working with young players when they were both assistant coaches -- Williams in Portland, Malone in Cleveland."
