Will Raps woo Nugs GM Ujiri?
By Tom Carpenter
We've known for a while now that the Toronto Raptors have set their sights on wooing Denver Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri away from his current gig to take over their basketball operations. Since his contract expires June 30, it's always been a possibility that he could move on from Denver, but now it looks like it may be an inevitability.
"The Denver Nuggets have granted the Toronto Raptors permission to speak to the NBA's Executive of the Year, Masai Ujiri, and a meeting is expected to take place within the next 24 hours, league sources told Yahoo! Sports," wrote Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
"Unless Denver responds soon with a market-value contract extension to keep its general manager, Ujiri is prepared to leave Denver for the chance to rebuild the Raptors organization, league sources said."
Ujiri worked with the Raptors for several years as an assistant general manager, so he appears to have a personal connection to the organization that may make a difference in his final decision on where he will be next season. The Raptors have some talented players on their roster, but Ujiri would have his work cut out as he tries to work around big payouts for Rudy Gay ($18 million) and Andrea Bargnani ($11 million) next season.
