Raptors deciding soon on Colangelo?
By Nick Borges
UPDATE: The Toronto Raptors are expected to decide soon about the fate of team president and general manager Bryan Colangelo.
According to Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun, Colangelo met recently with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president/CEO Tim Leiweke to talk in further detail about the final option year on his contract, and though nothing has been announced yet, "it is expected that a decision on Colangelo’s future will be made in the not-to-distant future."
As we mentioned last week, what Leiweke decides to do with Colangelo figures to have a direct affect on head coach Dwane Casey's future with the team. If Colangelo is brought back, it almost certainly means that Casey will return next season as well. If Colangelo is replaced, more than likely the Raptors will be in the market for a new head coach.
Tim Leiweke, the former President and CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group (owns the Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Galaxy and has a stake in the Los Angeles Lakers), is now the new president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. Leiweke's hiring means there could be changes coming to the Toronto Raptors front office.
President and general manager Bryan Colangelo is under fire in some circles and his future is uncertain. MLSE owns an option for next season and Colangelo is expected to meet with the board soon to plead his case to keep his position.
Leiweke's hiring immediately got the rumor mill stirring that he may try to bring in Phil Jackson to run the Raptors, according to Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne. Jackson recently talked about his desire to come back to the NBA as an executive and some rumors have linked him with the Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte Bobcats, Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings, if they relocate to Seattle.
Head coach Dwane Casey is under contract through next season and Colangelo said earlier this week that he expects the head coach to return. That could change now with Leiweke in charge of the team.
