Is Dallas a playoff team?
By Joe Kaiser
Before you write off the Dallas Mavericks this season, you should consider what the analytics reveal about the team.
Making the playoffs in the Western Conference this season will be just as difficult as it has been in recent years, with the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City, Memphis, San Antonio and Houston looking like safe picks to make it and a huge cast of teams like Golden State, Denver, Minnesota, Portland and New Orleans battling for the three other spots along with the Mavericks.
According to ESPN Insider Bradford Doolittle, though, the Mavs are one team much more highly regarded by analytical systems like SCHOENE and ATH then they are by the general public. Here's Doolittle with more.
Bradford DoolittleAnalytics show Dallas winning 47 games
"I found the Summer Forecast projection for Dallas (39 wins) a little shocking. If Rick Carlisle could drag last year's roster to a .500 record, how could you project this year's team to be worse? The analytics see a nice depth of talent for the Mavericks, with two units of solid players. Of course, while our projection systems make a hard effort to model how teams fit together, it's not an easy task when it comes to squads like Dallas, which has so many new pieces. That said, the way Dirk Nowitzki has played this preseason would probably have been enough for the summer forecasters to tack on 3-4 wins to the Mavericks prediction."
