Jason Collins' hope for a roster spot
By Joe Kaiser
It's Aug. 23 and Jason Collins still hasn't found a home on a NBA roster. The Detroit Pistons reportedly showed interest in the 12-year veteran center, but ultimately elected to pass on a formal offer.
Here's what Collins, who in late April became the first openly gay athlete in North America's four traditional major sports leagues, may need to have happen in order to land a guaranteed deal in the NBA next season.
ESPN Insider Kevin Pelton was asked about Collins in a SportsNation chat today, and said the landscape has shifted as far as Collins' potential suitors goes.
Kevin PeltonCollins' chances of an opening day roster spot are dwindling
"I can't say it's looking good. I have a list of players that is used to keep track of everything, and most contenders are running out of roster spots or have other preferred frontcourt options out there (the Clippers with Lamar Odom, for example). So he might have to hope a non-contender would really value his leadership."
