Latest buzz on Hayward's contract

If Utah Jazz swingman Gordon Hayward plays out the remainder of his current contract, he will become a restricted free agent at season's end. That means that he can test the market, but the Jazz can match any offer sheet made by another team. Getting to that point requires risk from both sides, though. The Jazz risk overpaying if another team gives him a hefty contract or a deal with a "poison pill" payment. Hayward risks getting injured or under-performing on a young team trying to find their way.
