The Mets' outfield mess

The New York Mets are in a rebuilding phase, a direction that was cemented this winter when the club traded away NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays for a pair of high-ceiling prospects in Travis d'Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard. But even a team playing for the future needs to have a better outfield than the Mets' current arrangement.

The New York Yankees may have found the right-handed hitting outfielder GM Brian Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com they were after. The club has inked veteran Juan Rivera to battle Matt Diaz and perhaps Russ Canzler.

The Yankees, who have three left-handed hitting outfielders on the roster, also do not have a clear answer at designated hitter with the losses of Raul Ibanez and Andruw Jones. Once Alex Rodriguez returns from hip surgery, a rotation of A-ROD, Kevin Youkilis and Mark Teixeira is likely.
