The Phillies tried to be as diplomatic as possible regarding Jonathan Papelbon, the volatile closer who drew a seven-game suspension for making a lewd gesture at fans Sunday as he walked off the field to boos in the ninth inning.

"We apologize to our fans for the actions of our player yesterday,” concluded a statement released by the club.

If Cole Hamels pitched his final game in a Philadelphia Phillies uniform on Tuesday night, he certainly made it a good one. Hamels shut out the New York Mets for eight innings, scattering six hits and striking out eight batters in a 6-0 win.
